Waiting for mail

Your address is being set up.

Temp mail is safe for one kind of job: a low-stakes sign-up you won’t come back to. It is unsafe for anything tied to money, your identity or an account you need to keep. To decide, ask what would happen if a stranger read this message. If the answer is nothing much, the address at the top of this page is fine.

The main risk: a free inbox isn’t private

A free temp mail inbox has no password. Anyone who has the address can read the mail in it. A random name is hard to guess, but a chosen name like “john123” may be opened by someone else at the same moment you are using it.

The name isn’t reserved for you after you leave, either, and that creates the failure worth worrying about. Say you register with a shop using a temp address and save your card there. The shop’s “forgot password” link now goes to an inbox you no longer control. Whoever opens that name next gets the reset email. So treat every account made with temp mail as one you could lose, and keep cards, home addresses and private messages out of it.

What temp mail does protect you from

  • Marketing mail and sold mailing lists reaching your real inbox
  • Your real address being exposed if that one site is breached
  • Tracking images, which stay hidden here until you choose to load them
  • Scripts inside an email, which can’t run in the sandbox messages open in

Can temporary email be traced?

Yes, in the sense that it hides only one thing: your email address. The site you sign up to can still see your IP address, your browser and everything you type. Any website you visit can see the connection you arrive on, and that includes this one, which also uses Google Analytics to count visits if you accept cookies.

How far a trace could go depends on who is asking and on what the companies involved keep. Police with a valid legal order can often get records from a website or a network provider, and the rules differ by country. Temp mail keeps your inbox tidy. It doesn’t make you anonymous, and anyone who says it does is overselling.

Is temp mail legal?

Using a short-lived address to receive email is generally legal, though this is general information and not legal advice, and laws vary by country. The address doesn’t change the legality of what you do with it, so fraud or harassment stays illegal. Separately, many websites require a valid permanent address in their terms, and they can close an account that breaks those terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Temporary Mail legit?

It is a working service you can test in a minute: send a message from your own email to the address on this page and watch it arrive. It doesn’t ask for your name or a password, so a free address gives it little about you to hold.

Can someone else read my temp mail?

Yes, if they use the same address on a free inbox. Random names make that unlikely but not impossible. For mail only you can read, Pro accounts offer private addresses, or use your regular mailbox.

Can opening an email here harm my device?

Scripts in the message are blocked by the sandbox. Links are different, because they open a separate site in a new tab and the sandbox can’t protect you there. Click only the links you were expecting.

Can a website tell I’m using temp mail?

Often, yes. Many sites check addresses against lists of known temporary email domains, and some refuse them at the form.
